A celebration of the music and poetry of African-American artists. This concert’s music includes beautiful melodies, driving rhythms and powerful messages – an evening of engaging music that highlights underrepresented artists and composers of color. The central piece on the program is William Averitt’s Deepness of the Blue, a 5-movement setting of Langston Hughes’ moving texts on love and the struggle of the human experience. Other selections include Rosephanye Powell’s The Word was God, Anthony Trecek-King’s (current conductor of the Boston Children’s Choir) I’m Building Me a Home and the gorgeous Harry T. Burleigh arrangement of Deep River.

Time In A Bottle: The Mozart Effect | Featuring Tempus
Wednesday, March 20, 2019, 7:30 PM

This unique performance is presented as part of the “Asheville Amadeus Festival” – a city-wide celebration of music and art presented by local artists and arts organizations. Tempus, our advanced small vocal ensemble, performs music of living composers, such as the hauntingly beautiful, My Very Own, by Susan LaBarr, and the mesmerizing, Ave Maria, by       . These pieces are paired with Mozart’s Laudamus Te and a few of his bawdier drinking songs. Come share in a musical feast and “Forget the cares that bore us…” and let the ‘effects of great music’ lift you to that effervescent place!

The Asheville Choral Society comprises a 125-person chorus with concerts throughout the year, and a small, select group, Tempus, available for intimate concerts at your charity or corporate event. Contact our executive director, Laurel Ahrnsbrak via email at or call (828) 367-7350.
