Join the Asheville Choral Society

The Asheville Choral Society is seeking two talented professionals to support our musicians, staff, and volunteer leadership as we prepare for an exciting new season. 

We are currently accepting applications for a part-time Assistant Conductor and a contract Bookkeeper. We welcome candidates who share our commitment to musical excellence, collaboration, community, and joy.

Assistant Conductor

The Asheville Choral Society is seeking an Assistant Conductor for its 2026–2027 season. This part-time, contracted position works closely with and under the direction of Artistic Director Dr. Melodie Galloway.

The Assistant Conductor plays an important artistic and operational role—supporting rehearsals, preparing to conduct the ensemble when needed, coordinating with section leaders, and helping rehearsals and performances run smoothly.

Position Details
Contract period: August 15, 2026–May 15, 2027
Compensation: $5,500, paid in monthly stipends
Rehearsal schedule: Monday evenings, approximately 6:30–9:00 p.m.
Typical workload: 4–6 hours during regular weeks and approximately 12–15 hours during performance weeks
Reports to: Artistic Director


Primary Responsibilities

Prepare all repertoire and be ready to conduct in the Artistic Director’s absence
Assist with warmups, rehearsals, sectionals, and conducting as assigned
Substitute for the Artistic Director when needed
Assist with new-member auditions
Support music ordering, packet assembly, and distribution
Coordinate with section leaders and relay musical notes and information
Lead occasional SA and TB sectionals
Assist with setting up and striking rehearsal and performance spaces
Help coordinate orchestra and audio-engineering needs at performance venues
Serve as backstage manager for performances, including lineup, procession, and recession
Meet with the Artistic Director at least twice monthly during the contract period
Qualifications

Candidates should have:

A bachelor’s degree in music with experience conducting choral ensembles, or a commensurate level of experience in choral music
Strong knowledge of choral repertoire and effective rehearsal practices
Basic keyboard proficiency sufficient to play individual voice parts while leading sectionals
The ability to prepare repertoire thoroughly and step into a conducting role when needed
Strong organizational, leadership, and communication skills
Availability for Monday-evening rehearsals, performances, production weeks, and other scheduled commitments

Bookkeeper

The Asheville Choral Society is also seeking a dependable, detail-oriented part-time Bookkeeper to support the organization’s financial operations.

Working with the Executive Director and Treasurer, the Bookkeeper will help ACS maintain accurate records, meet its financial obligations, and provide timely financial information to organizational leadership.

Primary Responsibilities
Maintain accurate financial records in the organization’s accounting system
Record and appropriately categorize income and expenses
Reconcile bank, credit card, and other financial accounts
Process bills, payments, payroll, and reimbursements
Maintain supporting documentation for financial transactions
Prepare routine financial reports for the Treasurer and Board
Assist with annual tax filings, contractor reporting, and other financial compliance requirements
Coordinate with the Treasurer and Executive Director

Candidates should have:

Professional bookkeeping or accounting experience
Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
Experience working with nonprofit organizations and/or small businesses preferred
Familiarity with accounting software and payroll systems
The ability to handle confidential financial information appropriately
Clear, responsive communication and the ability to work independently

Candidates located in the Asheville area are preferred, but local residency is not required.
